“TO SERVE, AND TO GIVE HIS LIFE”

(Mark 10:32-45)

INTRODUCTION: Why did Jesus say the same thing three times?

I. WE MUST EMBRACE THE EVIDENCE OF CHRIST’S KINGSHIP.

II. WE MUST COMPREHEND THE CHARACTER OF CHRIST’S KINGDOM.

Questions for Family Review/Discussion:

  1. Did you grow up with the “count to three” method of discipline? If so, how effective was it? If not, what method was used to get your attention?
  2. Instead of saying “tall, taller, tallest,” how did the Hebrews emphasize things?
  3. Why did Jesus have to make the same speech (vv. 32-34) three times?
  4. Jesus proved himself repeatedly with many irrefutable miracles. Why didn’t everyone believe in him? What reasons today inhibit true faith in him?
  5. Do you think that the Christian faith is based on undeniable truth and that every honest person would believe on Jesus? Why or why not? If the faith is so obvious and compelling, why don’t all people believe? Why is overwhelming evidence not enough to compel belief by all?
  6. In what way did all of the disciples show that they did not grasp (or perhaps refused to accept) Jesus’ message about his being put to death?
  7. Why do you think Jesus’ disciples could not understand his teaching about his death and resurrection? What truths might you find hard to reckon with? Why?
  8. What “cup” was Jesus going to drink? What did he mean by their also drinking from his cup? What might suggest about the meaning of the Lord’s Supper?
  9. In what way is Jesus’ announcement that his followers would suffer actually good new to us today? How does it reinterpret our own times of suffering?
  10. Jesus came not to be served but to serve? What does this tell us about his true humanity? His divinity?
  11. What does Jesus’ coming to serve and give tell us about our identity and purpose as humans? Why is this lesson hard for us to learn and practice?
