Questions for Family Review/Discussion:

1. Think of a time when you offended someone (or someone offended you). How did the two of you “make it right again”? What does it normally take for offended parties to be reconciled?
2. What are some “theories” of the atonement made by Christ explaining what Christ accomplished on the cross? Why do you think there are different theories?
3. What does the view of “substitution” teach about Christ’s accomplishment on the cross?
4. What are some Old Testament examples of a substitutionary atonement?
5. What “feast” (vs. 6) is in view in this text? How does this feast clearly demonstrate “substitution”?
6. Who proposed that Pilate might release a prisoner during the feast? Whom did they choose? Why choose this prisoner? What does this tell us about the reason why this particular crowd likely gathered that morning?
7. The crowd seemed particularly vicious in calling for Jesus to be crucified? Why did the ask for this horrible penalty for him instead of for Barabbas?
8. What did the Israelite heads of households have to do to spare their firstborn from the angel of destruction? Why is this a demonstration of mere faith, and not a meritorious work on their behalf? What does this tell us about the nature of true faith?
