 INTRODUCTION: We don’t always know what’s best for us, but God does.

III. THE SABBATH IS FOR DOING GOOD.

Questions for Family Review/Discussion:

  1. What are some common mistakes that children make because they do not know what’s best for them?
  2. Why do you think God must command us to do what’s best for ourselves? What two main deficiencies explain our need for this?
  3. What was to the heart of God’s covenant with his people? (See Jeremiah 30:22) What had the Jewish leaders of Jesus’ day turned this into instead?
  4. What bothered the Pharisees about the disciples plucking heads of grain to eat on the Sabbath?
  5. What is the only correct interpretation of the fourth commandment?
  6. Explain: “The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath.”
  7. What is the best benefit we could receive from the Sabbath?
  8. The Sabbath command is still a “command.” Why is it important to remember this truth? (think: children and naps)
  9. Why do Christians worship on Sunday when the “Sabbath” was on Saturday?
  10. What forms of Sabbath day work are recognized by the Westminster Confession? Why?
  11. The Sabbath is really a foretaste of what? Why is it important to know this?
