Questions for Family Review/Discussion:

  1. How important do you think accurate expectations are in life? Explain.
  2. Can you think of a time when your expectations either underestimated or overestimated a situation? Tell about it.
  3. Moses led the people out of Egypt through the wilderness to the Promised Land. Jesus leads his people out of sin and death through the wilderness to the Promised Land of heaven. What is the wilderness of this world like? What should we expect of living our whole life in the wilderness with Jesus?
  4. What does it mean to “follow” Jesus? Fully flesh out this word-picture.
  5. What is involved in following Jesus as our teacher?
  6. Is it really possible to live an “unexamined life”? What questions are people mostly asking today? What questions are they avoiding?
  7. Does accepting Jesus’ provision in the wilderness mean living a life of austerity?
  8. How much is enough? How can we find the answer to that question?
  9. “Among unbelievers, the flow of life is always inward.” Explain.
  10. What important dynamic makes true Christian fellowship possible?
  11. All of life in this fallen world is living in the wilderness. Explain how a church can be an oasis in the “desolate place” of this world? How are you helping to make the church an oasis?
  12. Contrast Herod’s feast with Jesus’ feast in the wilderness? What do you think makes the second one so incomparably better?
